The Breeders Cup World Championships debuted in 1984 in Hollywood Park (California). It's considered the season-ending championship of North American horse racing.

The event currently has 14 races after increasing from 11 in 2008. It is held over a two-day period.

Each of the 14 races has different purses with the lowest ranging from $500,000, all the way up to the $5 Million Breeders Cup Classic. That race is run at 1 ¼-miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby. The purse for the Classic increased from $4 Million back in 2005.

Churchill Downs will be the 2010 location. It has hosted the Breeders Cup six previous times, more than any other track. Santa Anita Park in California was the location in 2008 and 2009, the only time the same track has hosted two years in a row.

Four year-old Ghostzapper has the fastest time in the Breeders Cup Classic at 1:59.27. That came in 2004 and he was named thoroughbred racing's overall yearly champion over near-Triple Crown winner Smarty Jones.

The most Breeders Cup wins by a jockey is held by Jerry D. Bailey at 15. D. Wayne Lukas easily has the most wins by a trainer at 18. Surprisingly, Lukas has only had one winner of the Breeder Cup Classic, Cat Thief back in 1999.
