The 2009 Breeders Cup was one of the most exciting in the history of horse race betting. There were 14 races in all (see below), with a record setting performance in the final one.
Zenyatta was the horse making history last year, winning the $5 Million Breeders Cup Classic as the favorite. It was the first win for a female horse in that race. Raven's Pass was the winner in 2008 and Preakness Stakes winning Curlin in 2007.
Other winners this last decade include Invasor (2006), Saint Liam (2005), Ghostzapper (2004), Pleasantly Perfect (2003), Volponi (2002) and Tiznow in 2001 and 2000.
Zenyatta went 5-0 overall last year and is an undefeated 14-0 all-time. The five year-old Zenyatta just missed winning the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year to rival (and fellow Filly) Rachel Alexandra.
These two ladies are scheduled to meet in an epic battle at the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park on April 9.
The purses totaled $25.5 Million last year. That makes it one of the biggest prize money events in the entire sports world.
