The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for three-year old thoroughbreds. It is held every year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May. It is considered one of the greatest events in American sports and horse betting.

The Kentucky Derby is known as the ‘The Run for the Roses’ or ‘The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.’ This is typically the most watched horse race in North America. The first one was run in 1875 and the purse is $2 Million.

The Derby is best known for being the first leg of the Triple Crown, with the Preakness and Belmont Stakes following. Affirmed is the last horse to win the Triple Crown in 1978, although there have been several close calls since.

Secretariat has the fastest Kentucky Derby time at 1:59.40. That came in 1973 on the way to winning the Triple Crown.

The most Derby wins by a jockey is held by Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack. They each did it five times. Arcaro’s reign spanned from 1938-1952. His most famous horse was easily Triple Crown winner Citation. Hartack’s first win was in 1957 and the last in 1969.

The most wins by a trainer is Ben A. Jones (6) and the most by an owner Calumet Farm (8).
