The 2009 Belmont Stakes wasn’t for the Triple Crown, but it had plenty of intrigue. Mine That Bird had won the Kentucky Derby and Rachel Alexandra the Preakness. Both were ridden by jockey Calvin Borel.

Borel switched back to Mine That Bird in the Belmont Stakes with Rachel Alexandra not running. It looked like he might become the first jockey to win the Triple Crown on two different horses, but he finished third behind Summer Bird and Dunkirk.

There have been two huge upsets at the Belmont Stakes in recent years. The first was Da’ Tara ($79.00) upsetting Big Brown in 2008. That was a race for the Triple Crown, but Big Brown shockingly fell off the pace and had to be eased up by jockey Kent Desormeaux.

Desormeaux was quoted as saying that he was ‘out of gas.’ It was an unbelievable turn of events for those who saw Big Brown blow through the competition at both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Back in 2004, Birdstone ($74.00) upset Smarty Jones’ Triple Crown bid. The horse from Philadelphia caused a frenzy of excitement in the City of Brotherly Love, and is still considered a sports legend even after the defeat.

Savara in 2002 has the biggest payout in Belmont Stakes’ history at $142.50. War Emblem was the victim of the huge upset that year.

    2009 Summer Bird $25.80
    2008 Da’ Tara $79.00
    2007 Rags to Riches $10.60
    2006 Jazil $14.40
    2005 Afleet Alex $4.30
    2004 Birdstone $74.00
    2003 Empire Maker $6.00
    2002 Sarava $142.50
