The 2009 Kentucky Derby was one of the most exciting in history. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 long shot, beat the field by 6 3/4-lengths. That was the biggest margin of victory since 1946. The jockey was Calvin Borel, who rode Street Sense to victory just two years prior in 2007.
Mine That Bird’s winning payout of $103.20 is the second highest in Derby history. 1919 winner Donerail still holds the record with his $184.90 mutuel.
Another huge story was Big Brown in 2008. A crowd of 157,770 tuned in, which made it the second largest in Derby history. The margin of victory was 4 3/4-lengths over Eight Belles and the finishing time was 2:01.82.
This made trainer Rick Dutrow extremely happy as Big Brown backed up his boastful words leading up to the race. It was the third Derby win for jockey Kent Desormeaux, who had previously ridden Fusaichi Pegasus (2000) and Real Quiet Pegasus (1998) to victory.
As you can see below, big payouts have been plentiful in the Kentucky Derby in recent years. Giacomo also had a huge payout in 2005 ($102.60). There were also three $20.00 or more payouts from 2001-2003.
