The Preakness is a horse race for three-year old thoroughbreds. It is held every year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on the third Saturday in May.

Termed 'The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans', the first Preakness took place in 1873. The attendance ranks second in North America behind only the Kentucky Derby. The purse is $1.1 Million.

The Preakness is best known for being the second leg of the Triple Crown, after the Kentucky Derby and before the Belmont Stakes. Affirmed is the last horse to win the Triple Crown in 1978.

The fastest Preakness time is shared by three horses. Tank's Prospect (1985) and Louis Quatorze (1996) both ran a 1:53.40. Curlin (2007) ran a 1:53.46 in 2007, but that’s considered a tie due to clocking differences. Curlin just edged favored Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.

The most Preakness wins by a jockey is held by Eddie Arcaro (6). Arcaro is the only two-time Triple Crown winner. He accomplished the feat with Citation in 1948 and Whirlaway in 1941. He is widely considered the best American jockey in history.

The most wins by a trainer is R. Wyndham Walden (7) back in the 19th century. D. Wayne Lukas is tied for second with Thomas J. Healey with five. Lukas last won in 1999 with Charismatic.
