The Preakness is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The track opened in 1873, the first year the Preakness was held.

This year’s event will take place on May 15th, 2010. It is the 135th running of the event.

The distance of the track is 1 3/16-miles or 9 1/2-furlongs. That’s 1/16 of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby and 5/16 of a mile shorter than the Belmont Stakes.

The attendance at the Preakness in 2009 was just 77,850. That was a huge drop from the 121,876 in 2008. A big reason is they banned spectators from bringing their own beverages on the 'infield'. There is no plan to reverse the alcohol ban, so the 2010 numbers could be down as well.

Pimlico Race Course covers approximately 140 acres of land. The daily seating capacity is 14,852, but it goes easily over the 100,000 mark due to standing room admission and the infield section.

The Preakness track is based in the traditional dirt. Many famous tracks have switched over to synthetic surfaces, including Southern California's three major tracks, Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar. Santa Anita was the host of the famous Breeders Cup the past two years.
