The 2009 Preakness race was one of the most exciting of all-time. Filly Rachel Alexandra finished ahead of a late charging Mine That Bird, the surprise Kentucky Derby winner. She became the first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years.

Rachel Alexandra was ridden by Calvin Borel, the jockey of Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby. He switched horses for the Preakness after Rachel Alexandra didn't run in the Derby.

Big Brown was the story in 2006 after an impressive run at the Derby. He was an extremely heavy Preakness favorite and showed why with a finishing time of 1:54.86. It was good enough for a 5 1/4 lengths win over second-place Macho Again. Icabad Crane was third.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux added to his impressive resume with his second win at the Preakness. Real Quiet in 1998 was the other winner.

Curlin had a thrilling race in 2007 after beating Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense at the wire. The final time of 1:53.46 matched Tank’s Prospect (1985) and Louis Quatorze (1996) for the fastest at the Preakness at the current distance.

As you can see below, recent winning payouts for the Preakness have been low, especially compared to the Kentucky Derby. Only Bernardini in 2006 has had a greater than $20.00 payout ($27.80) since 2002.
