The Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes are the three legs of the Triple Crown. Win all three in the same year and you’ll join a select group (see below) who will be immortalized until the end of time.
The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978. He was ridden by legendary jockey Steve Cauthen.
The 1970’s have shaped into one of the golden ages of horse racing. In addition to Affirmed, Seattle Slew and Secretariat are all ranked on Blood Horse magazine’s list of the top-100 U.S. horses of the 20th century.
Secretariat is ranked only behind Man o’ War. Man o’ War didn’t even win the Triple Crown after not running in the 1920 Kentucky Derby. Seattle Slew is ranked as the ninth best horse in history, while Affirmed is 12th.
The big question now is when are we going to see the next winner? Since 1978, 11 horses have won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, only to go down to defeat at the Belmont Stakes.
While we’re surely in a current Triple Crown drought, history shows it’s not unprecedented. No horse won between 1948 and 1973. We are certainly due for a Triple Crown winner and fans and media are clamoring for it.
Affirmed (1978)
Seattle Slew (1977)

Count Fleet (1943)
Whirlaway (1941)
War Admiral (1937)
Omaha (1935)
Gallant Fox (1930)
Sir Barton (1919)
