Super Saver works again.
Sarafina is the horse to beat. She has yet to lose after winning the $971k Prix de Diane in Chantilly this weekend. This is the 6th victory for owner Aga Khan and trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre in the French Oaks. Sarafina won through steady gains. She did not jump and bump out of the gate; instead she rested behind, moving from the sixth to the lead by furlong pole, winning by 1 ½ lengths. Sarafina, in the tradition of the French Oaks winners, will take an easy summer to prepare for later races.
Zenyatta just won her 17th race in a row. It was a narrow one this Sunday at the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park. She did not have a good start, and was 2 ½ lenths behind the leader after 8 poles. It was only in the home stretch that Zenyatta closed on St. Trinians, taking the win by only a half length. This gives Zenyatta the longest winning streak in North America. Having won last years Breeders’ Cup Classic, this win got owners Jerry and Ann Moss and her trainer, John Shirreffs, looking ahead to November. Zenyatta has earned an astounding $6,074,580 over her career, according to the Daily Racing Forum.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Super Saver, but he is back in racing form. The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands winner had not had a work since his disappointing 8th-place loss in this year’s Preakness. However, things are looking very good. Looking ahead to the Haskell Invitational in the beginnig of August, Super Saver worked 4 furlongs in 49.21 seconds this weekend. It seemed it has taken the colt this long to recover from his bout at Pimlico field. Super Saver looks poised to exceed expectations in the second half of the season.
