20th May 2010 in Belmont Stakes, Horse Betting

The number of horses that will be posting at Belmont is slowly shrinking. Setsuko, runner up in the Santa Anita Derby, will not be in the race. His trainer, Richard Mandella, cancelled the horse’s appearance as the 3-year-old colt was suffering from ankle inflammation. Setsuko will take a couple months off, but he is looking to return during the summer season.

The major disappointment is Dublin missing the Belmont. Placing 7th at the Kentucky Derby and 5th in the Preakness, this means that there will be no 3-year-old who has run in all three races of the Triple Crown this year. Dublin has appeared in 5 races in the past 12 weeks and needs some rest.

These losses mean that the probable field for Belmont is at 10:

Ice Box

Fly Down

Drosselmeyer

First Dude

Game on Dude

Make Music for Me

Stately Victor

Stay Put

Spangled Star

The horses are not the only ones who are recovering. Julian Leparoux, who took a spill off in the Black Eyed Susan on May 14th has a compression fracture in his back. He rode two races in as many days directly after the spill, and only after that did he go to a doctor.

Calvin Borel, winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby and constant crowd favorite, is also sidelined for the time being with an eye infection. This is not a critical problem and he should be back on his mounts by May 22nd. Borel has a massive lead in the standings for the first Spring Meet leading rider title.
