It is that time of the year again when college basketball is the one sport grabbing all the headlines as the NCAA Tournament, also known as March Madness, is right around the corner (March 16th) and the conference tournaments are underway around the nation before the Big Dance.
The conference tournaments around the country are starting to come down to the wire as most conferences are already down to just four teams heading into their Semi-finals.
Amongst the conferences to get the most attention, as the National champion usually comes out of these conferences, are the ACC, Big East and the Big 12. All three of these conferences are full with NBA caliber talent and will almost certainly have the majority of their top teams competing for a National championship in the coming weeks.
In the ACC conference the Duke Blue Devils are the top dogs this season and will be looking to win the ACC conference tournament and possibly clinching a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. The ACC tournament is at eight teams at the moment, but besides Maryland and possibly Florida, Coach K’s squad should advance and ultimately win this tournament.
Over in the Big East tournament it is turning out to be a battle of the underdogs and possible Cinderella stories as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Marquette Golden Eagles, West Virginia Mountaineers and the Georgetown Hoyas will battle it out in the Semi-finals. The Fighting Irish look like the team to come out on top, but the Hoyas will put up a fight if both of these teams advance.
And finally there is the Big 12 conference tournament which includes the number one team in Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks who could win their second National championship since pulling off the upset over Derrick Rose’s Memphis Tigers back in 2008. Much like Duke in the ACC tournament, the Jayhawks will only have a couple teams that could knock them out in the Kansas State Wildcats and the Baylor Bears, but in the end I believe we will see Kansas win the Big 12 tourney and head into the NCAA Tournament with a number one seed.
