The Connecticut Huskies have little margin for error as they host the West Virginia Mountaineers on Monday night.
UConn is a 2 ½-point home ‘dog at Belmont.ag. ESPN will broadcast this Big Monday opener at 7 pm ET.
Connecticut’s (16-11 SU, 11-14 ATS) chances of making March Madness looked bleak just a few games ago. They were coming off a bad home loss to Cincinnati, the first one back for coach Jim Calhoun after his medical leave of absence.
Things have changed the last two games. An 84-75 win at Villanova as 9 ½-point ‘dogs, and a 76-58 win at Rutgers as six-point favorites, have turned things around.
Connecticut has always had talent, but with a lack of depth. Calhoun has done a good job the last two games of getting more players involved.
No. 8 West Virginia (21-5 SU, 11-14 ATS) had a bad week two weeks ago, losing at home to Villanova and at Pittsburgh.
They bounced back last week with wins and ‘covers’ over Providence and Seton Hall, both relatively easy opponents. The Seton Hall win (75-63) was a four-point contest with three minutes left before a late run ’covered’ the 11 ½-points.
This game tonight is all about the matchups. WVU usually dominates down low with its lineup of four forwards and one point guard (Truck Bryant). However, UConn is very big at the four and five positions and won’t be pushed around.
West Virginia will have to be real hot from three-point land to beat this motivated squad.
I’m taking Connecticut (+2 ½)
