29th July 2010 in NFL Betting

Last season the Carolina Panthers went through some tough times as they really couldn’t get anything going until season’s end and saw the end of the Jake Delhomme era after failing to reach the playoffs.

Not only did the Panthers fail to live up to expectations and miss the playoffs, but they also went through a drastic change at quarterback by replacing longtime starting QB Jake Delhomme with youngster Matt Moore. Even though the switch to Moore over Delhomme was highly criticized, the young quarterback played very well in place of the former Pro Bowler and will most likely be the starter behind center to start next season.

Despite Matt Moore making a name for himself last season and taking over the starting job for the Carolina Panthers, the struggling NFL franchise decided to draft big-name quarterback in the NFL Draft recently.

Coming into the NFL Draft, there was no shortage of big-name college quarterbacks like Tim Tebow (Florida), Colt McCoy (Texas) and of course Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), but arguably the best quarterback in the draft, besides Bradford, was Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame.

The one team that seemed destined to select the promising young quarterback was the Cleveland Browns. After trading Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos and releasing Derek Anderson, the Browns were in need of a new QB, but instead of drafting Clausen they signed Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace.

Fortunately for the Carolina Panthers, Clausen fell to them in the second round of the draft at the 48th pick. Even though most people anticipate Matt Moore starting at quarterback next season, Jimmy Clausen will be waiting for his shot in the bench and could get some playing time if Moore starts to struggle.

Reportedly, the Carolina Panthers have agreed a upon a four-year deal with Jimmy Clausen. The exact terms of the contract haven’t been disclosed just yet, but reports have the first year quarterback making $2.53 million in guarantees and a contract that could be worth up to $6.3 million dollars.

Odds to win the Super Bowl:

Carolina Panthers: 40 to 1
