Ice Box works incredible time

After working a 1:39.60 at Hollywood Park earlier this week, Dave in Dixie’s trainer, John Sadler, gave the horse the go-ahead to post at the Belmont Stakes. This increases the field to 11 in what is shaping up to be a very interesting race. Even bigger news is that Calvin Borel, winning jockey of the 2010 Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands, will take the mount.

Despite the good time, this has not been a good season for Dave in Dixie. His last race was in April when he took an unfortunate 5th place in the Illinois Derby. With the Derby and Preakness winners skipping the Belmont and with Calvin Borel jockeying it was an easy decision. This is only the 7th time in the history of the Triple Crown that the winners both the Derby and the Preakness are skipping the Belmont. Dave in Dixie also has the longest time since his last race, 9 weeks, of the field.

Dave in Dixie was not the only Belmont surprise from this week. Ice Box ran an incredible :46.64 over 4 furlongs. This time was very similar to the time he showed before he took second in the 2010 Derby. Although the Belmont is longer than the Derby, 1 ½ miles to the Derby’s 1 ¼, having a time that good is a very good sign. If Ice Box wins, this will be his trainer, Nick Zito’s, 3rd win at the Belmont.

Here is the current field for the 2010 Belmont Stakes:
