The NBA offseason has officially begun as the majority of the teams in the league ramp up for what will be arguably the most talented free agent market in NBA history.
With so many big-name free agents available this summer, the league could look drastically different next season and for the foreseeable future. Obviously the biggest names to become available on July 1st are LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, but there are also some big-names that have flown relatively under the radar and could seriously impact some of the best teams in the league.
The one team that hasn’t gotten mentioned much in terms of free agency is the Boston Celtics. This past NBA season was arguably one of their most successful in recent memory as they just came one game short of the Los Angeles Lakers for their second NBA title in three years. Even though the Celtics looked like they finally got back to their 2008 championship form, especially on the defensive end of the floor, next season they might see some of their best players and head coach leave Boston.
As of right now, Ray Allen will become a free agent on July 1st, Paul Pierce has the option to opt out and head coach Doc Rivers is uncertain about his future with the Boston Celtics.
Those three guys are extremely important to the Celtics moving forward, but despite their obvious options in the offseason, I am betting that all three of these future hall of famers will be back in Boston next season.
This summer Ray Allen will almost certainly receive offers from teams like the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls, Paul Pierce will most likely not opt out as he is due to earn $21.5 million dollar next season, but Doc Rivers believe it or not is the one guy in Boston that is most likely to leave.
There is no question that the Boston Celtics and all their players want Doc Rivers to stay, but Rivers is at that point in his life and career where his family is the one thing that he wants to concentrate on. Not only is Rivers feeling the itch to call it quits, but his family also lives in Orlando which makes it even more difficult to stay in Boston.
It is uncertain whether or not Doc Rivers will decide to return to the Boston Celtics, but he has said he is leaning in one direction, which direction it is remains a mystery though.
