The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have to beat the North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday if they hope to make the NCAA tournament.
Georgia Tech is a four-point favorite at Belmont.ag. This is a 7 pm ET game on ESPN2 and part of the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Georgia Tech (19-11 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) has two good inside players in Gani Lawal (13.6 PPG) and Derrick Favors (11.9 PPG). This is a young team overall with the freshman Favors one of several key underclassmen.
The Yellow Jackets are 2-0 SU and ATS against UNC this year. It’s hard to beat a team three times in a row, especially a storied program like this, but this Tar Heels team is a shell of its former self.
North Carolina (16-15 SU, 10-19 ATS) has had a terrible season after winning the national title last year. Larry Drew II had no shot at replacing Ty Lawson at point guard, and there are no great leaders like the departed Tyler Hansbrough.
The team was struggling even before Ed Davis went out with a wrist injury. UNC did get a couple of wins down the stretch, but it ended with an embarrassing 82-50 loss at Duke last Saturday night.
It would be nice if North Carolina could suddenly play with a little passion and not let this season end with a whimper. However, the Duke loss showed they have very little left in the tank and Georgia Tech should prevail as the motivated squad.
I’m taking Georgia Tech (-4).
