Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson (5/1) led the league with 1,760 rushing yards in 2008, only to fall to 1,383 last year. His yards per carry also dropped to 4.4, a career low. Expect a bounce back year for Peterson with Brett Favre handing him the ball once again.
Tennessee’s Chris Johnson (6/1) had one of the best seasons in NFL history last year with 2,006 yards. Johnson wanted a fat new contract, but he’ll have to settle for a small reworking.
Atlanta’s Michael Turner (10/1) gained 1,699 yards two years ago, but was limited to 871 last year due to ankle problems. Atlanta reportedly wants to limit his carries at least somewhat, so these odds seem overvalued.
Some value picks are Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew (12/1) and Pittsburgh’s Rashard Mendenhall (15/1). Mendenhall has limited competition with Willie Parker gone to Washington and they will run the ball the first four weeks with ‘Big Ben’ suspended.
Stay away from Dallas’ Marion Barber (12/1) and Thomas Jones (15/1). Jones is now with Kansas City which should really deflate his numbers.
