The first day of the NCAA Tournament was a booming success and lived up to the reputation of being unpredictable as we witnessed some thrilling upsets.
It is hard to figure out where to start about the events that unfolded yesterday in the first day of March Madness, but no matter where you begin, this tournament seems be turning into one of the most competitive in recent memory.
There were a total of seven upsets yesterday with lower seeds taking down higher seeds in sixteen games that were played. Some of the upsets weren’t a huge surprise like the 10 seed Saint Mary’s Gaels beating the Richmond Spiders 80-71 or the nine seed Wake Forest Demon Deacons getting the best of the Texas Longhorns 81-80, but besides the slight upsets, there were definitely some results that have already sent shockwaves throughout the tournament.
The biggest upset on Thursday would have to be the 14 seed Ohio Bobcats beating the three seed Georgetown Hoyas in convincing fashion by a score of 97-83. This was an upset to say the least as the Hoyas were thought to at least get to the Sweet Sixteen or maybe even the Elite Eight, but the Bobcats had other plans and now will play against the Tennessee Volunteers in the second round.
Another college basketball program that has gotten a lot of hype coming into the NCAA Tournament has been the fourth seed Purdue Boilermakers, but they had their work cut out for them on Friday when they faced off against the 13 seed Siena Saints who were also getting a lot hype for being a possible Cinderella team in the South Region.
The Saints put up a fight and played better than expected against the Boilermakers, but in the end Purdue was just too much for them to handle as they were able to hold off Siena with a 72-64 victory.
