10th September 2010 in MLB Betting

Seattle (+195) @ L.A. (-215); Total set at 7

Both teams are just playing out the rest of the schedule, but this is a division rivalry that has some bitterness to it, so you can expect both teams to show up and put on a show rather than just swing at the first pitch and see what happens. With little to play for in a game like this, it really is tough to consider laying -215 on a team that mentally isn’t there, so in this preview I will be looking at the total.

Many bettors are backing the under in this contest and with Seattle’s anemic offense up against Jered Weaver that is quality first level thinking. Weaver has been a stud all year, especially at home, and don’t let his 0-3 record in his last three starts fool you, he only has gotten 0.3 runs in support from his mates in that time. However, in his last 15 starts against the Mariners the Over has gone 11-3-1, suggesting that the familiarity he brings to this horrendous Seattle offense actually is a welcome sight to the Mariners players.

David Pauley is the starter for Seattle and like Weaver, he is 0-3 SU in his last three starts, but that is because of a 6.11 ERA. He has struggled at times all year but facing an Angels team that is only batting .190 against righties in their last 10 games might be able to bring his numbers back down to respectability. Or, he could be a welcome sight for the Angels and light him up.

I would lean towards the latter happening because the Angels bats have been struggling lately, and the day off yesterday was great for them to clear their heads and regroup for the final weeks. Being favorites like they are, you can expect the Angels to put up a decent number on the score sheet, and they could clear the 7 run total themselves.

However, Seattle will be seeing Weaver for the fourth time this year (0-3 so far) and well they might not win, they will make sure he doesn’t go into the off-season beaming with confidence over them. The Mariners will be selectively aggressive at the plate and look to take advantage of their scoring opportunites.

With a low number like 7, a Friday night game in front of a large crowd, both teams will want to put up some runs and give the fans a decent show. Take the over tonight.
