With NFL teams cutting down their rosters to the mandatory 53 man team, there was a lot of action today involving cuts and trades. The most notable moves were involving Arizona cutting Matt Leinart after weeks of speculation and looking for another team. Seattle also made a big name cut in getting rid of WR T.J Houshmandzadeh after new head coach Pete Carroll liked what he has seen from former USC grad Mike Williams in the preseason.
Carroll is a tough one to peg because although this looks like a sign of favoritism towards his old players, you can’t forget that he wasted little time in cutting ex-USC player LenDale White earlier this summer. Houshmandzadeh will likely be picked up fairly soon, so for those of you that have him on your fantasy team, I would hold off on dropping him before you find out what team he goes to and what sort of playing time and receptions he can expect to get.
St Louis also named 1st overall pick Sam Bradford as the starter heading into week 1, so what that tells me is that the Rams should be automatic fade material for the first few weeks, especially in his first road game in week 2 at Oakland. The “black hole” is never a friendly place to play for any opposing QB, let alone a rookie, so keep that in the memory bank for week 2 action.
With Arizona and Seattle making those cuts you can expect that a bit more action on their respective season win totals to be booked on “under” in the coming days, so if those were plays you were already looking at, you should get on board asap.
