30th July 2010 in NFL Betting

The NFL MVP has been won by a quarterback the last three years and the odds at Belmont.ag suggest it could happen again.

Peyton Manning (8/1) has won the last two years and four times overall. He split the award in 2003 with the now deceased Steve McNair.

Looking at the odds below, the first nine names are quarterbacks. Even the Jets’ Mark Sanchez (18/1) makes it before any running back, and he has no shot at MVP.

Adrian Peterson (20/1) and Chris Johnson (25/1) are the two leading running backs.

Johnson had over 2,000 yards rushing last year and still didn’t get a single MVP vote. That is ridiculous, but backs have won as recently as 2006 (LaDainian Tomlinson) and 2005 (Shaun Alexander).

The only wide receiver with odds is Randy Moss (40/1). A receiver has never won this award since it started in 1957. Considering a Hall of Famer like Jerry Rice never won, it’s safe to assume it won’t happen this year.

If you noticed there’s no defensive player listed, it’s because the last one to win was Lawrence Taylor (1986). Taylor has been in the news recently for other more ugly matters, but it shows how hard it is for a defensive player to take MVP.
