St. Louis (1/3) is a half-game behind Cincinnati after struggling again in a home series to Houston. The Cardinals are a great home team (38-18) overall, but their road play (22-30) must improve a lot. They’re overvalued at these odds.
Cincinnati (6/5) and St. Louis are a two-team race with everyone else double-digit games behind. The Reds are not fading no matter what most people predicted. They’re great value at these odds.
Chicago (100/1) will extend their 1908 jinx for another year. Manager Lou Piniella is stepping down at year’s end, but the Cubs at least have the financial resources to turn things around next season.
Milwaukee (100/1) is a very streaky team. They’ll lose several games in a row and then rip off some wins. The Brewers have been all-hit and no-field as expected.
Houston (500/1) just traded pitcher Roy Oswalt and first baseman Lance Berkman. However, they’ve won seven of eight games and are building nicely for the future.
Pittsburgh (500/1) has the NL’s worst record at 37-70. The Pirates are actually decent at home (24-28), but their MLB-worst road record (13-42) sinks them right to the bottom.
