The St. Louis Rams suffered a major blow to their offense this past Thursday in their third preseason game against the New England Patriots as they saw their best wide receiver Donnie Avery go down with a potentially serious knee injury.
It is uncertain how bad the knee injury is as this point in time, but initial reports say that he could keep him out considerable time this season as Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was quoted as saying the following:
“Donnie probably has a significant knee injury,” Spagnuolo said after the Rams’ 36-35 win. “We will know a little bit more when we get the tests.”
This is obviously bad news for the St. Louis Rams as they are trying to build around rookie quarterback Sam Bradford and without his best wide receiver, things will only get more difficult for the first overall pick in his first year on the NFL level.
Despite losing Avery to injury, Bradford had his most impressive performance yet in the preseason with 189 yards with two touchdowns. The performance really opened the eyes of the St. Louis Rams brass and teams around the league as Bradford looked really good under center and might be able to hold his own as the starting quarterback to start the season.
Much like the Minnesota Vikings with their wide receiver injuries problems to Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice, the St. Louis Rams will probably be on the lookout for wide receivers to fill the void left by Donnie Avery in order to give Sam Bradford more options in the offensive.
So even though the Rams saw one of their best players go down with knee injury that could keep him out the entire regular season, there are signs of hope in St. Louis as Bradford might be able to live up to his huge contract this season.
