Coming into this past NBA regular season, the Boston Celtics weren’t thought to be much of a threat to the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference as the boys in green were considered to be over the hill and no longer a superpower in the NBA.
Unfortunately for the Cavs and the Magic, that wasn’t the case as all the Celtics needed to do before heading into the playoffs was to get healthy. Even though the team was still a bit banged up heading into their first round matchup with the Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics were able to advance and really got on a hot streak as they were finally able to play with some much needed intensity on the defensive end of the floor.
Needless to say, the Boston Celtics were able to make it all the way the NBA Finals for the second time in three years. Even though they ultimately lost to the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers after taking them the distance in seven games, the Boston Celtics put themselves back on the map with their thrilling playoff run and could be a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference once again.
Despite emerging as a team to beat in the Eastern Conference once again, the Boston Celtics will have some moves to make this summer in order to ensure the same team comes back next season.
As of right now, there are only two players that the Celtics are really concerned about as Ray Allen will become a free agent on July 1st and Paul Pierce could chose to opt out and become a free agent as well.
At this point in time, Ray Allen will almost certainly re-sign, but Paul Pierce’s intentions are uncertain. If Pierce does decide to opt out he will be leaving $21.5 million dollars on the table as he is set to make that much next season, but with some many teams looking to upgrade their rosters this summer, you never know what can happen.
